Though a lifetime exercise enthusiast, Marisa didn't pick up a barbell until her late 30's. She immediately fell in love and a couple years after she decided to get a little competitive. Just a few days shy of her 40th birthday, Marisa took first place in her first show.
As a busy career woman of 3 young boys, she exudes what it means to be a strong woman. She shows us how exercise can enhance your quality of life and no matter how crammed your schedule, you always have time to take care of yourself.
My name is Marisa. I just turned the big 4-0 (and still can’t believe it)! I am a wife and mom of three boys-8, 6, and almost 4 years old and work mostly from home for the Department of Homeland Security as an Immigration Analyst in DC. I am an athlete -so I have been told-and after a lifetime of moving my body I am actually starting to believe that this term really does apply to me.
I am not entirely sure when I discovered my love for fitness. It’s almost as if I were just born with it. When I was 4 or 5 my mom enrolled me in tap, gymnastics, and ballet. I ended up sticking with ballet through the 8th grade, then picked it back up recreationally in college. I remember my mom taking me to her jazzercise and aerobics classes and I refused to sit in the baby sitting room, so she would let me take the classes with her. I remember loving those classes so much. In middle school I did track and high school I was on the drill team. It was a runner in my 20's, but severely injured my hip, so I had to take up other things like biking, pilates and yoga. While I was pregnant with my third son I started doing Body Pump at home. I got a small barbell and some weights and just loved the burn of the weight, but being pregnant couldn’t really lift any too heavy.
It was after he was born that I was waiting at the bus stop for my kiddos and saw a video by Bret on Facebook. I think one of my friends liked a video of his and I thought he was cute so I looked at it. (LOL) At the time, I had no idea where in the world that one video would lead me. It was ultimately to Get Glutes, which is my favorite program in the world!
I had been doing Get Glutes for about 2 years, but was having some knee and shoulder pain so I decided to see a coach to look at my form and give me some pointers. I started training with him and that led me to my first bodybuilding competition in November! That was fun, but the diet was extremely grueling especially with all the stress of home and work. Now, I have a new goal. In January I will start training for my first powerlifting competition which will be in April!

What were some of my biggest eye-opening moments? I guess I’d have to say my strength and tenacity.
I just have to keep moving forward. I am not one to sit still for too long and stir. If something is not working for me, I make the necessary adjustments and move on.
